Gatecrashing St. Peter’s Square this morning where Pope Francis was seen wearing a live lamb across his shoulders, protesters from the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) threw paint and blood on the Pontiff in an attempt to raise awareness and deter attendees from wearing animal.

“There’s nothing fashionable about fur torn from the bodies of struggling animals,” said PETA activist Joan Ringle. “And even if the animals are still alive and still have not had their skin torn from their struggling bodies, they don’t know that. It’s mentally cruel. It wasn’t fashionable for Jesus to carry a lamb over his shoulders and it’s not now.”

Ringle went on to say that lambs were not stupid, and that they “most certainly” remember times when they were slaughtered in synagogues. PETA is urging the Pope and people everywhere to choose fake sheep next time they “perform such a cruel and insensitive exhibition.”
